Project 365 - Photo of the Day - September 4, 2008

=So I was sitting at my desk and looked out the window and I saw these workers repairing our artwork. This piece is called Solar Time Plane by Dale Eldred. We have more than 200 pieces of artwork in our Public Art and Design Program. As the Assistant Director I was responsible for checking all of the invoices for all charges related to the public art program. The conservation is very important component of our program because we have a lot of wear and tear on our public art due to the sun, wind, rain and storms. Our program has a financial component in the ordinance that says that a percentage of the public art funds must be used ONLY for conservation. It is very unique in the realm of public art.

The bottom line of my thought process is that I was actually seeing the results of my work out the window!

This is what the artwork looks like in the spring and the fall when the tilt of the Earth reflects the sun just right on the mylar strips.

Empty Nest Syndrome. It happens sooner or later to all of us parents. I am not looking forward to it quite yet. However our friends, Lynn and Richard, are experiencing it right now. Their son, Andrew, left for Michigan last week and now they like to have dinner with us on Sunday evenings. This time we went to their house for dinner and to play Pictionary! We actually had fun!

Rachel and Adina were having a typical sister moment in the family room. I think Rachel had the upper hand!

Joel and Richard are discussing something that is in the sink. I don't remember what the conversation was about. Richard is the mayor of Lauderhill. We have known him since Rachel started Hebrew School ten years ago!

I snapped this one because I happened to walk past our wedding photo and realized it was getting lost in the middle of all of the girls art projects! It's okay, that is what I love about being a parent. You never know what your children are going to create out of found objects.

And so it began . . . our Bat Mitvah mode as I was calling it! All of the events and planning and shopping leading up to the big day just one month away.

Here we are sitting in the food court at the Broward Mall having lunch. We were very lucky and found two dresses for Rachel and one for Adina. They wanted to dress more formally for temple and more "Rock 'n Roll" for the party. As for me . . . well, still looking!

When I came home from work, Joel was just sitting on the couch waiting for us. He looked very calm and relaxed and freshly showered! We decided to try a new Italian restaurant near our house. It was a rainy afternoon, but that is Florida for you. If you don't like our weather, stick around for 15 minutes!

I snapped this as we were driving on Inverrary Blvd. It was pouring, but no thunder or lightning. Just a lot of rain.

I loved these flowers. They were sitting in the middle of the table. At first I thought that they were real but quickly realized that I thought quite wrong.

It has been a very long time since I have uploaded to this blog. I would say that I am sorry, but I am not. I have just been preoccupied with life. I knew that it would happen sooner or later.

First of all, I have been the acting assistant director of the Broward Cultural Division since April. That has certainly taken a toll on me. I have never been so busy in my life. I can't even remember what I am supposed to do from day to day. I have to rely more and more on the staff to remind me where I need to be. It is a very odd feeling to not know.

I find myself craving quiet time at the computer to just catch up on emails. The amount is overwhelming. And, the content of what I am dealing with is so very different that what I am used to.

This is a photo of Rachel in the evening as she is studying her Economics homework while she is doing her nails! I know the two don't really go together, but for a teen, anything goes!

Project 365 - Photo of the Day - August 22, 2008

Friday night. My favorite part of the week. The entire weekend lies ahead. Unfortuanately, I was in excruciating pain. I am not sure what I have done to myself, but my back is killing me. It isn't like a pulled muscle, it is more like a sharp knife in my lower back. I have a doctor's appointment next week, but in the meantime, I am popping Advils and leaning on ice packs.

I stayed home while the girls went out with Joel for dinner. When they came back they brought a tiny stuffed toy filled with catnip and the kitties took turns playing with it. I snapped these as I was relaxing in bed.

After two days of cleaning the house, checking emails, watching movies, catching up on my new favorite TV show, "Mad Men," it was the first day of school. Since I leave the house at 7 a.m. I didn't see my girls up and dressed. So Joel came home from work to snap the obligatory first day of school photos!!

Every other year Adina had to stand on the rock that you can see behind her, but this year the girls are almost the same height! Wow, that just says it all about time passing. This is Rachel's senior year and Adina's last year in middle school. So it is a big year for everyone!
