Project 365 - Photo of the Day - November 9, 2008 Part II

To end this perfectly wonderful Sunday, we made plans with the Kaplans to go out to dinner to our fun restaurant in Planation called Hurricane Wings. They have other stuff on the menu, but mostly they have fun local beers on tap and tons of flavors for wings (which I really don't eat, only taste).

As we pass the time until it is time to leave for the restaurant . . . Rachel and Joel shared a laugh in our new favorite chairs in front of the house.

My new favorite beer of the moment . . .Pumpkin Beer. Sounds weird? Well it tastes good to me.

And these are the beers that you can taste to see which one you like on tap. They give you these thimble-sized tastes of each one. Since Lynn doesn't like beer, I sampled them on her behalf!

And on the way out to the car I jumped up onto Joel's back, just like when we were kids and Robert snapped this photo of us. Aren't we silly?????

This is why we moved to South Florida. For days like this. The temperature in the 70s with low humidity. Joining a group of friends in the park under the shade trees with a picnic. Reading the Sunday newspaper, talking if we feel like it and listening to jazz from a live band.

Joel is sitting here with Robert, Lynn and Richard. You can see my empty pink chair, just calling out to me to sit down and relax.

But, of course, before I settle in and become one with the chair, I wandered around the park to snap photos of the pretty blossoms in the trees and on the ground.

This is the jazz group, their name is Jazz Survivors.

The bench and the tree stumps are public art, part of Lauderhill's percent for art program. They commissioned two of our artists to create the art in this park . . . Ilene Lieberman Park. The artists, Beth Ravitz and George Gadson are also part of the Broward County Public Art and Design Program and grant recipients. There is more art in the park . . . on the gazebo, behind the stage area and along the concrete paths.

I just liked the way this tree looked, bare like it was the middle of winter up north, but on a lush, green golf course.

Don't know what kind of bird this is, but I was very interested in watching him in the murky water next to the park. There were two little boys, 5 and 7 years old, talkikng to me the entire time I was trying to watch this bird. They weren't really bothering me and I found it sweet that they were so interested in my camera and why I was taking photos of the bird.

I wouldn't have taken this photo if it weren't for my two new little friends. They pointed out the "bees" to me and I immediately pulled them away because these are wasps and don't need much provocation to start stinging and they don't stop like bees. I was fascinated in their construction of their home underneath the wooden railing that I was leaning on to take the photos of the bird. In fact, my little friends may have saved me from a painful sting!!

So this is what the Mayor and his wife do as empty nesters on a Sunday morning!!

Even Joel looks relaxed!

Project 365 - Photo of the Day - November 8, 2008

My colleague who works at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts is married to the photographer who was working at the Film Festival. So she sent me this photo of Rachel and me. I love this photo!! We don't often have a chance to dress up like this. In the photo with us is Greg von Hausch. Greg has been the Executive Director of the Film Festival for 20 years and we have worked together since day one! I miss him because he moved up to St. Augustine and only comes down for board meetings and the Film Festival. So during the festival we bump into each other quite a bit. Other than that Greg is flying around the world to other film festivals looking for the best of the best to show at our festival.

The Fort Lauderdale Film International Film Festival is the longest in the world and screens more than 80 films at many locations throughout the County. And . . . to top that off, they have a theater . . . Cinema Paradiso . . . in downtown Fort Lauderdale that screens independent films year-round.

Project 365 - Photo of the Day - November 3, 2008

So I was busy cleaning up the kitchen, putting all of the dirty dishes in the dishwasher, putting the food away . . . slowly, minding my own business. When I went back to the dining room table, this was the scene . . . Newton minding HIS own business having a slow drink of water out of my water glass!

Come on, cute, even if it is yukky.

Project 365 - Photo of the Day - November 2, 2008

I had to upload the last of the Indiana photos because Kim Newton sent them to us a couple of days ago. Joel and Rachel and John looked so great that I just had to share. I still can't believe that John just had a triple by-pass and was up and around and attending Alumni functions with Joel and Rachel.

They were all dressed up for the Friday night distinguished alumni awards dinner.

The Kaplans have an annual event at their home . . . a wine tasting for their Rotary Club! Well, this year Joel and I were invited. It was informative but, of course, Joel and Lynn were like school children poking fun at poor Richard, who by the way takes his wine knowledge extremely seriously. I did find a wine that I fell in love with and Richard let me take it home. And on Sunday evening when they come for dinner, they are bringing more of the leftovers to sample again!

Halloween. Somehow this holiday has become larger than Christmas but without presents, just the giving out of candy. The expense of costumes and programming that you see in the paper is overwhelming. Well my children opted for simplicity. I love it! Adina wanted to be an 80s Diva and Rachel, a Red Sox baseball player.

Nice and simple.

And the little roll puppet, that is Joel's way of entertaining us at the dinner table!

This is the first year that Joel and I stayed home and the girls went out Trick or Treating with their friends (and moms). Joel and I had a brief date, but very brief because Rachel was home by 8:30 p.m. Oh well, we will take it where we can!
